Diphtheria: Kano Government Rules Out School Closure Over Outbreak

The Kano State Government has ruled out the closure of schools or postponement of academic activities over the ongoing diphtheria outbreak in the state.

The government said the current situation does not warrant keeping children away from school, stressing that schools would reopen as scheduled.

The spokesperson for the state Ministry of Health, Nabilus Kofar-Naisa, disclosed this while responding to concerns over the outbreak and decisions by some states, including Plateau, to postpone school resumption.

According to him, Kano State arrived at its decision based on the current situation and the rate of diphtheria infections recorded in the state.

Kofar-Naisa, however, urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children for symptoms associated with the disease.

He advised parents to promptly take children showing suspected symptoms to health facilities for proper medical attention.

“Children showing symptoms should not be allowed to mix with others until they have received appropriate medical attention,” he said.

The ministry spokesperson also urged parents to ensure that suspected cases are kept away from other children until they have received appropriate treatment and are medically cleared.

He assured residents that the government would continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate measures as necessary to protect public health.
