June 12: Nigeria’s Democracy Must Work for the Masses not few Politicians — Aborisade

As Nigerians commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, Oyo State Governorship hopeful, Barrister Chief Niyi Aborisade (BANA), has called for a renewed commitment to the principles of democracy, good governance, and people-oriented leadership.

Aborisade described June 12 as a historic milestone that symbolizes the triumph of the people’s will and the enduring struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.

In a statement issued to mark the occasion, he said Democracy Day offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, celebrate its progress, and recommit themselves to building a society founded on justice, accountability, and equal opportunity.

According to him, June 12 remains one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s political history because it demonstrated the determination of Nigerians to defend their right to choose their leaders and shape the future of their nation.

“The significance of June 12 cannot be overemphasized. It is a reminder that democracy is not merely about political power; it is about the welfare of the people, the protection of fundamental rights, and the pursuit of a better society for all,” he said.

Aborisade noted that while democracy has faced several challenges over the years, it remains the best framework for ensuring peace, stability, and national development.

He maintained that democracy thrives when leaders are accountable, institutions are strong, and citizens actively participate in governance.

The governorship hopeful stressed that true democracy must be reflected in the everyday lives of the people through quality education, accessible healthcare, economic empowerment, security, and social justice.

He lamented that many Nigerians are still struggling under difficult economic conditions but expressed optimism that the nation can overcome its challenges through visionary leadership and responsible governance.

Aborisade, a devoted admirer of the progressive philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, said Nigeria must embrace policies that prioritize human development and the collective welfare of the people.

“Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s ideology was built on the belief that government must serve the people. His vision transformed lives through education, social investment, and purposeful leadership. Those principles remain relevant and must continue to guide our democratic journey.”

He emphasized that leadership should be measured not by promises made during campaigns but by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

According to him, the essence of democracy is to create opportunities for ordinary people to thrive and achieve their aspirations.

Aborisade urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their belief in the country, despite current difficulties, adding that nations become stronger when citizens remain united in pursuit of common goals.

He also encouraged young people to actively participate in democratic processes and resist the temptation to abandon hope.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the possibility of change. Our democracy may not be perfect, but it provides us with the platform to demand accountability, influence governance, and build a better future together.”

The legal practitioner further called on political leaders at all levels to place national interest above personal ambition and to govern with integrity, compassion, and a sense of responsibility.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy is a sacred trust. It demands sacrifice, patriotism, and service. We must continue to nurture it, strengthen our institutions, and ensure that government truly works for the people.”

Aborisade expressed confidence that Oyo State and Nigeria possess immense potential for greatness and urged citizens not to lose faith in the nation’s future.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to embrace unity, peaceful coexistence, and collective responsibility as the country continues its democratic journey.

“June 12 is a celebration of hope. It reminds us that the voice of the people matters, that freedom is worth defending, and that a brighter tomorrow is possible. Let us remain hopeful, united, and committed to building the Nigeria of our dreams.”

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
