‎Oyo Government Expands Solar Farms to Power Streetlights, Boost Night Economy, Increase Security Surveillance

‎The Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Chairman of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Professor Daud Kehinde Sangodoyin, has said the state government is expanding its solar farm projects to power streetlights, improve security, stimulate the night economy, and increase access to electricity across the state.

‎Speaking on ongoing energy initiatives, Sangodoyin disclosed that several high-mast floodlights have already been completed and are currently being powered through a hybrid system of solar energy and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

‎He said some of the completed installations are located at the Agbowo area, some near the University of Ibadan, and other at Technical University corridor, while another has been installed around the Onipepeye area after the railway station.

‎According to him, the solar farm initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to deploy clean and sustainable energy solutions for public infrastructure and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

‎‎The commissioner further explained that improved street lighting would significantly strengthen security and encourage greater commercial activities at night.

‎He added that the state’s embedded power generation programme, driven by solar and other energy sources, would help close existing electricity access gaps by supplying power to homes, industries, and communities.

‎Sangodoyin noted that increased access to stable electricity would support industrial growth, attract investment, and create more job opportunities for residents of Oyo State.
