Oyo Government Moves to License IBEDC, As Energy Commissioner Says State Electricity Regulation Commission is Superior to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company
The Oyo State Government says it will soon require the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to obtain an operating licence from the state, as it moves to fully assert its regulatory authority over the electricity sector in the state.
The Commissioner for Energy and Chairman of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Professor Daud Kehinde Sangodoyin, said the commission has been empowered to oversee electricity operations and enforce compliance by all power investors within Oyo State.
He explained that under the existing legal framework, no electricity provider can operate in the state without a licence issued by the state regulatory commission, including IBEDC.
According to him, the move is part of efforts to strengthen oversight, improve service delivery, and provide an official channel for handling consumer complaints relating to electricity supply and distribution.
Sangodoyin noted that the commission now has regulatory authority over electricity investors operating in the state, in collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), but with clear statutory backing for state-level licensing.
He maintained that IBEDC and other operators would be required to comply with the new licensing regime to continue operations within Oyo State.
