Oshiomhole Aks N’Assembly, Presidency to Approve Economic Retaliation Against South Africa as Xenophobic Attacks Claim Nigerians Lives

Former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on the Federal Government to adopt a retaliatory stance against South Africa by targeting major South African-owned businesses operating in Nigeria, following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Oshiomhole urged the Federal Government to consider drastic economic measures, including the revocation of operating licences of companies such as MTN and MultiChoice (DSTV), if the attacks persist.

He said Nigeria must no longer tolerate repeated violence against its citizens abroad, insisting that diplomatic caution should not replace firm action.

“I am not going to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It is an economic struggle,” Oshiomhole said.

He argued that Nigerians should not continue to suffer attacks while South African companies enjoy free access to the Nigerian market.

According to him, Nigeria should respond by asserting its economic leverage and creating opportunities for Nigerians within sectors dominated by South African firms.

“When we hit back, the President of South Africa will not only talk but will also go on his knees to recognise that Nigeria cannot be intimidated,” he said.

Oshiomhole further stressed that while perpetrators of crimes should be prosecuted under South African law, the reported killings and attacks on Nigerians were unacceptable.

“We will not condone any loss of life. If a crime has been committed under South African law, they have the right to bring anyone to justice. But to kill our people as if we are helpless, we will not allow that,” he added.

DAILY POST reports that several Nigerians have recently been affected by renewed xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, with reports of attacks on individuals and destruction of businesses sparking outrage and calls for diplomatic intervention.

The incidents have continued to strain relations between both countries, with growing pressure on Nigerian authorities to respond more firmly.
