Suspected vandal electrocuted to death in Rivers while Attempting to remove component from high-tension line
The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc (PHED) has confirmed that a suspected vandal, identified as Khalifa, was electrocuted while allegedly tampering with its electrical infrastructure in Oginigba Community, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In a statement on Tuesday, the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Olubukola Ilevbare, said the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Friday, April 24, during an alleged attempt to remove a component from a high-tension installation.
According to the statement, the suspect, believed to be in his late twenties, died on the spot after reportedly disconnecting a pot insulator from a high-tension pole.
PHED explained that the situation turned fatal when power was restored shortly after the equipment had been tampered with.
The company described the incident as a tragic consequence of vandalism, warning against continued attacks on power infrastructure.
“It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers are severely impacted,” Ilevbare said.
She further described the deceased as “a victim of his own trade,” adding that the incident should serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar criminal activities.
“It is hoped that the death of Khalifa, who paid the ultimate price with his life, will serve as a warning to others engaged in such acts,” she added.
PHED also reminded the public that electricity-related vandalism is a criminal offence punishable under the law, with penalties of up to 21 years’ imprisonment. The company added that investigations were ongoing to identify other individuals involved in similar activities within the area.
In a related development, PHED announced the upgrade of Mbodo Aluu Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area to Band A, a classification that guarantees improved electricity supply.
Ilevbare said the upgrade would ensure a minimum of 20 hours of daily electricity supply, noting that the community previously operated under Band D and was served by an 11kV feeder.
She explained that the upgrade involved the installation of new transformers as well as the replacement of key infrastructure, including conductors, insulators, poles, and other fittings.
According to PHED, the intervention underscores its commitment to improved service delivery. The company also commended residents of Mbodo Aluu for settling their outstanding electricity bills.
