Oyo Government Announces December 29 For Council Elections

The Oyo State Government has announced December 29, 2026, as the date for chairmanship and councillorship elections across the state’s 33 local government areas.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, saying the State Executive Council had approved the payment of its counterpart funding to the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to commence preparations for the elections.

According to the statement, the elections will be jointly financed by the state government and the 33 local government councils, with the local governments contributing 60 per cent of the total cost and the state government providing the remaining 40 per cent.

The local government councils are expected to contribute ₦2,566,800,000, while the state government will provide ₦1,711,200,000.

The State Executive Council also approved the release of ₦437,446,398.58 for the accreditation requirements of the Nursing Programme at Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.

Oyelade said the funding would support the university’s diversification efforts beyond its traditional focus on science and technology and help it become financially self-sustaining.

He explained that the university was at the final stage of the accreditation process, warning that failure to meet the deadline for professional accreditation of the Nursing Programme could jeopardise the substantial investment already made in the project.

The commissioner added that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde had spent more than ₦3 billion on the acquisition of equipment for the commencement of the programme.

The Council also approved the payment of the state government’s counterpart funding for the construction, renovation and equipping of the Oyo Annex of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

According to the statement, the Council noted that about 70 per cent of patients accessing services at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso come from Oyo and its surrounding communities, making the expansion of healthcare infrastructure in the area a priority.

It said the state government would provide ₦6,744,379,570.28, representing 50 per cent of the project’s total cost, while Oyo East Local Government Area would contribute the other half in an equal amount.

The total cost of the project is ₦13,488,759,140.56.

The Council commended Governor Makinde for what it described as his consistent performance and commitment to the development of the state, despite the approaching end of his tenure in May 2027.

It also praised the governor’s strategic cooperation with the 33 local government councils, describing the relationship as an important factor in advancing development across the state.
