Ronaldo Breaks Silence On Rift With Jesus

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has explained why he left the national team camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions.

Ronaldo, in a lengthy statement, said the disagreement stemmed from his proposed playing schedule during Portugal’s latest international camp and the coach’s subsequent decision to use him differently from what had been agreed.

The 41-year-old also revealed that he had initially planned to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup but was persuaded by the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, FPF, to continue.

Ronaldo said he was later consulted about the appointment of Jesus and backed the decision, describing it as the right choice.

He said Jesus subsequently contacted him and invited him to a meeting at Cidade do Futebol, where the coach presented a plan for his involvement with the national team.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus told him he would play Portugal’s first and final matches of the camp, while his workload would be managed by making three or four changes per match.

He said Jesus also suggested that he remain in Portugal instead of travelling with the team to Norway and Denmark, but he rejected the proposal.

Ronaldo said he considered it inappropriate to remain behind simply because he would not play the away matches, particularly because he was the team’s captain.

The coach, he added, eventually agreed with his position.

Ronaldo said another meeting took place at his home in Lisbon shortly before the camp began, during which the principles earlier agreed were maintained.

He subsequently played at Alvalade and accepted being substituted without complaint, saying his priority was Portugal’s victory.

However, he said the situation changed on the day of the match in Norway when an assistant coach informed him that Jesus wanted to speak with him.

Ronaldo said Jesus asked whether he was fit enough to play for 30 minutes, despite the earlier plan that he would only feature in the match at the Dragão.

“I was fully focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day,” Ronaldo said.

He added that he agreed to the request and warmed up from half-time but was eventually not introduced.

“The coach had broken his word to me,” he said.

Ronaldo admitted that he failed to greet the fans after the match, describing his reaction as a mistake and apologising to the Portuguese supporters and others who had travelled to watch him.

He said he subsequently met Jesus and Simão Coutinho, who had been involved in their earlier discussions, and that they agreed the coach would clarify the matter at a press conference.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus was expected to state publicly that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time, that the playing plan had been proposed by the coach, and that it was a mistake to ask him to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.

Ronaldo, however, said the coach’s conduct at the press conference was completely different from their private conversation.

He alleged that Jesus adopted an aggressive posture and made comments that did not reflect what had been agreed.

Ronaldo said a document containing the points he had validated was subsequently presented to the coach.

Among the points, according to Ronaldo, was Jesus’ acknowledgment that the Norway match was not part of the original plan, that he had made a mistake by asking Ronaldo to warm up without playing him and that he wanted the Portugal captain to remain with the national team.

Ronaldo said the episode represented the second time Jesus had broken his word to him.

“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me the truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people,” he said.

The Portugal captain said he had also spoken with the FPF president and Jesus on the morning of the press conference, making it clear that he was willing to leave if they no longer wanted him.

He said they both insisted that his place remained in the national team.

Ronaldo stressed that he had never interfered in the technical or tactical decisions of any coach during his nearly 25-year international career.

“I accept, for better or worse, what they propose that I do. I respect the decision, and when they break their word to me, I feel that my place is not there,” he said.

Despite his frustration, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates for leaving the camp, saying he accepted responsibility for his decision.

He also said he was prepared to face any disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation.

“I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor,” he said.

Ronaldo also dismissed suggestions that his latest controversy could bring his Portugal career to an end.

He said there would eventually be time for a farewell but insisted that his immediate priority remained competing for the national team.

“I can promise all my fans, naturally and especially all Portuguese people, that we will have one or more farewell matches; there will be time for that,” he said.

“But when I think of the national team, what I really think of is competing.”

Ronaldo recalled remaining with Portugal after receiving news of his father’s death, saying he chose to stay with the team until after the following day’s match because of his commitment to the country.

He said he would continue to make himself available for Portugal if he remained physically fit, continued playing for his club and served any suspension imposed on him.

“I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo said.

“This is, believe me, the purest of truths.”
