AHOY Calls for Fiscal Transparency, Youth Investment as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence Anniversary
The Association of Humble And Obedient Youths (AHOY Flagship) has called on governments at all levels to prioritise fiscal transparency, youth development and accountable governance as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The call was contained in a statement signed by the President of AHOY Flagship, Comrade Ayodele Soetan, and issued on Thursday to commemorate the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
In the statement issued, the association said humility and obedience should not be interpreted as passive compliance, docility or submission to the status quo, but should serve as principles for responsible citizenship and national development.
According to AHOY, true humility entails the discipline to continuously learn, critically assess oneself and place collective progress above personal interests, while obedience should mean loyalty to the rule of law, constitutional order and the overall interest of Nigeria.
The association said civic discipline must be matched by transparency, integrity and effective performance by those in government, stressing that the social contract between citizens and the state was reciprocal.
AHOY said government opacity, poor fiscal accountability and failure to adequately address public hardship could weaken the moral authority of authorities to demand compliance from citizens.
It therefore called for what it described as radical fiscal transparency, including open disclosure of public expenditure, reduction in the cost of governance and strict enforcement of anti-corruption measures across ministries, departments and agencies.
The association also urged governments to protect the potential of Nigerian youths through increased investment in energy, security, digital infrastructure and education, arguing that young Nigerians should not be compelled to leave the country in search of opportunities to fulfil their potential.
It further advocated responsive and equitable policymaking that places human capital development above short-term political considerations, with clear and measurable performance benchmarks that could be subjected to public scrutiny.
On youth participation in nation-building, the association urged young Nigerians to pursue what it described as institutional apprenticeship by developing a deeper understanding of governance, policy formulation and industrial technology.
It said youth energy should be channelled towards acquiring the skills required to influence and transform institutions from within, rather than being limited to criticism of existing systems.
The association also called for ethical innovation and value-driven enterprise, urging young entrepreneurs to focus on long-term value creation and build businesses and technological solutions anchored on integrity, technical excellence and sustainability.
AHOY equally advocated stronger inter-generational collaboration, saying national development required constructive engagement between younger and older generations.
It said the experience of senior statespersons could be combined with the technological agility of young Nigerians, while youths should remain willing to challenge actions that could undermine the country’s future.
Addressing Nigerian youths at home and in the diaspora, the association said independence should be viewed not as a finished achievement inherited from 1960, but as a continuing national responsibility requiring discipline, competence and sustained demand for effective institutions.
“Let our humility be our capacity to listen and learn, and let our obedience be our unwavering loyalty to the constitutional growth, security, and prosperity of Nigeria,” the association said.
AHOY urged Nigerians to use the 66th Independence Anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to national development, responsible citizenship and accountable governance.
