Remi Tinubu Warns Nigerians Against Food Waste As Global Food Crisis Threatens

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called on Nigerians to end the culture of food waste, warning that worsening climate change, global conflicts and disruptions to supply chains are posing growing threats to food security worldwide.

The First Lady made the call as Nigeria joined other countries to mark World Cleanup Day 2026, with the global theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”

In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Oluremi Tinubu said irresponsible consumption habits could no longer be sustained amid growing global challenges affecting food production and supply.

“This year’s focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply,” she said.

She stressed that efforts to keep the environment clean must begin at the household level, particularly by reducing the amount of waste generated.

“Keeping our environment clean begins with reducing the waste we generate,” the First Lady said.

She urged households, businesses and communities to become more conscious of how they purchase, prepare, consume and preserve food.

According to her, responsible consumption should be regarded as a civic responsibility, rather than merely a personal choice.

“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she said.

The First Lady also linked waste reduction to broader national development, noting that efforts to build cleaner cities must address the causes of pollution and inefficient use of resources.

She said collective action was necessary to create healthier and cleaner communities for future generations.

“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she added.
