Nigerians Will Pay Less For Transport In October – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that transportation costs will begin to reduce from October 2026 under the Federal Government’s National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the initiative is aimed at reducing the burden of transportation costs on Nigerians through targeted interventions across priority transport corridors nationwide.

Tinubu said the commitment followed a meeting he held with the governors of the 36 states on August 27, during which an agreement was reached on measures to drive down transportation costs.

“On August 27, I met with the governors of our 36 states, and we agreed on a clear objective. From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” the President said.

He said an implementation committee had subsequently been established for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as chairman.

Tinubu noted that substantial work was already being undertaken by the committee, PI-CNG and EV, state governments and other stakeholders to identify priority transport corridors and determine the interventions required to achieve the objective.

“I am aware of the considerable work already underway by the committee, PI-CNG & EV, the states, and other critical stakeholders to identify priority transport corridors, determine appropriate interventions, and put the necessary arrangements in place,” he said.

The President said the need to accelerate the programme had become more pressing due to the prevailing global energy crisis.

“This work has become even more urgent amid the current global energy crisis,” Tinubu said.

The Federal Government has increasingly promoted compressed natural gas and other alternative energy solutions as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and lessen the impact of energy prices on Nigerians.
