Tinubu Directs 95% NIN Enrolment Coverage By December 2026
President Bola Tinubu has directed relevant government agencies to achieve at least 95 per cent National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment coverage across Nigeria by December 2026.
The President gave the directive on Wednesday in Abuja during the 8th National Identity Day celebration, where he stressed the importance of a robust national identity system to Nigeria’s digital and economic development.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tinubu said the Federal Government was investing in the digital infrastructure needed to strengthen the country’s identity ecosystem and position it as a foundation for economic growth.
He said the theme of the celebration underscored the need to connect Nigeria’s digital ecosystem with the digital economy and broader national development.
“Nigeria’s digital ecosystem must power Nigeria’s digital economy, and Nigeria’s digital economy must help power Africa’s economy. Our identity infrastructure will be a critical component of this ambition,” the President said.
Tinubu said the government was working towards a system in which citizens could use secure digital identification to access a wide range of services, including online businesses, banking, welfare payments, healthcare, education and transportation.
He also said the Federal Government was accelerating efforts to establish a secure national digital system capable of protecting electronic documents, signatures and transactions.
According to him, the initiative would enable Nigerians to securely sign documents online, verify the authenticity of government documents and protect digital payments and official communications.
The President said achieving extensive NIN enrolment would strengthen identity verification, improve access to services and support the government’s broader digital transformation agenda.
