Breaking: NFF Sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew After World Cup Qualification Setback

The Nigeria Football Federation has directed members of the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down from their positions with immediate effect following the team’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The NFF Executive Committee announced the decision in a brief statement on Monday, although the federation did not disclose specific reasons for the directive.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation said.

The decision comes after a disappointing 2026 campaign for the Super Falcons, who endured a difficult outing at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria began its Group C campaign with a defeat to Malawi, who were participating in the tournament for the first time. Despite the setback, the Super Falcons progressed from the group stage but eventually crashed out in the quarter-finals after losing to Cameroon.

Cameroon went on to win the WAFCON title for the first time, defeating Malawi in the final on Sunday.

The quarter-final defeat denied Nigeria an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, leaving the nine-time African champions with another opportunity to secure their place in the global tournament through a playoff.

However, the Super Falcons suffered another setback in the playoff against South Africa, further complicating their route to the World Cup.

With the latest development, the NFF has now ordered the technical crew to step aside as the federation begins to consider the next steps for the national women’s team and its qualification campaign.

The Super Falcons will now be hoping for a fresh start as the NFF works towards resolving the team’s technical situation and securing Nigeria’s participation at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
