Soludo Unveils Chinua Achebe Statue, Pledges to Raise Future Literary Icons
Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled a statue in honour of Nigeria’s literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, describing the late novelist as a global symbol of excellence whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony on Saturday, Governor Soludo said Achebe’s immense contributions to African literature and culture earned him worldwide acclaim.
He stressed that his administration remains committed to preserving the celebrated author’s legacy while creating an enabling environment that will nurture more literary talents in Anambra State and across Nigeria.
“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State,” the governor said.
The ceremony attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and literary enthusiasts.
Among those in attendance was the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, who described Achebe and Governor Soludo as world-class figures whose achievements have brought honour and recognition to Anambra State.
Widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, Achebe gained international acclaim with his 1958 masterpiece, Things Fall Apart, a novel translated into dozens of languages and studied in schools and universities around the world. His literary works remain a reference point in African storytelling and post-colonial literature.
The unveiling of the monument is expected to preserve Achebe’s enduring legacy while promoting cultural heritage and literary tourism in Ogidi, his hometown. The gesture also reinforces the state’s commitment to celebrating its rich cultural and intellectual heritage.
Professor Chinua Achebe died on March 21, 2013, at the age of 82 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, after a brief illness.
He was laid to rest on May 23, 2013, in his hometown of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. His influence continues to resonate globally, more than a decade after his passing.
