NYSC reforms: Adire fabric to replace Khaki as uniform
The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme and promoting indigenous industries.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the decision aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen local production, stimulate the textile industry and ensure that government spending directly supports the Nigerian economy.
“It is Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have producers in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, and we have textile industries. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.
He explained that the new uniforms would be produced entirely within Nigeria, a move expected to create jobs, boost local textile manufacturers and encourage greater patronage of Nigerian-made products.
The minister said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing local capacity while reducing dependence on imported materials for official use.
Beyond the planned uniform change, Olawande disclosed that the Federal Government is also restructuring the NYSC deployment system to ensure corps members are posted based on their academic qualifications, professional backgrounds and areas of study.
He noted that the new posting framework is designed to improve the effectiveness of the scheme by deploying corps members to sectors where their skills and expertise are most relevant, thereby enhancing their contribution to national development.
According to the minister, the ongoing reforms are part of a comprehensive effort to transform the NYSC into a more productive, skills-driven and development-oriented institution that promotes youth empowerment, national integration and economic growth while supporting local industries.
