Nigeria Marks International Day of the Tropics as Expert Calls for Environmental Protection

‎Nigeria on Monday joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of the Tropics, observed annually on June 29 to celebrate the rich biodiversity and economic potential of tropical regions while drawing attention to the environmental challenges they face.
‎
‎The observance, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2016, serves as a global platform to promote sustainable development across tropical countries and encourage coordinated action against climate change, environmental degradation, and food insecurity.
‎
‎The commemoration comes amid growing concerns over the impact of climate change, environmental degradation, food insecurity and biodiversity loss on tropical countries, including Nigeria.
‎
‎The day also underscores the importance of collective efforts to promote sustainable development and strengthen climate resilience.
‎
‎An Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ibadan, Dr. Idris Badiru, said the occasion provides an opportunity for governments, researchers, development partners and communities to renew their commitment to protecting the environment and advancing sustainable development across tropical regions.
‎
‎Speaking on the significance of the day, Dr. Badiru noted that Nigeria, as a tropical nation, continues to face environmental challenges such as deforestation, flooding, desertification and the adverse effects of climate change, all of which threaten agriculture, food production and rural livelihoods.
‎
‎Dr. Badiru also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, research institutions, development partners and local communities to develop practical and long-term solutions to climate-related challenges.
‎
‎He added that raising public awareness and encouraging community participation in environmental conservation are critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring a more sustainable future for Nigeria and other tropical nations.
‎
‎The International Day of the Tropics, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2016, is observed annually to highlight both the opportunities and challenges facing tropical regions and to promote global action towards sustainable development.
