IGP Disu Bars Police Officers from Unauthorised Social Media Activities
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to refrain from unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating and sharing videos, conducting live broadcasts, and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform or in circumstances that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official approval.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Edem Iniedu, the IGP stressed that while social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving police personnel must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
According to the statement, officers are prohibited from producing or sharing unauthorised content while dressed in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.
The police chief directed Commissioners of Police, heads of departments, commanders, and other supervisory officers across the country to immediately sensitise personnel under their commands and ensure strict compliance with the directive.
He further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate disciplinary action against erring personnel within their areas of responsibility.
To strengthen enforcement, the IGP ordered the Force Intelligence Department and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaging in activities inconsistent with the professional standards and ethical expectations of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu reiterated the Force’s commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, assuring Nigerians of the police’s continued dedication to maintaining public trust, institutional integrity, and effective service delivery.
The directive is part of ongoing efforts by the police leadership to uphold professionalism and ensure that the conduct of personnel, both online and offline, reflects the values and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
