BREAKING: Oyo Government Increases 2026 Budget to Over ₦1 Trillion
The Oyo State Executive Council has approved an upward review of the state’s 2026 budget, pushing it beyond the ₦1 trillion mark as part of efforts to complete ongoing projects and fund critical development programmes across the state.
The approval was announced on Wednesday following the Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
Oyelade said the council approved a supplementary budget that increased the state’s 2026 appropriation from ₦892.1 billion to ₦1.102 trillion, representing an increase of about ₦210 billion.
According to him, the budget adjustment became necessary following requests by ministries, departments and agencies for additional funding to ensure the completion of ongoing projects and the realization of the administration’s development objectives before the end of Governor Seyi Makinde’s tenure.
The commissioner noted that the revised budget would strengthen the government’s capacity to deliver key infrastructure, social welfare and economic development projects across the state.
As part of the approvals, the council also sanctioned the release of ₦8.77 billion as the first tranche for the procurement of teaching and learning materials for primary and junior secondary schools. The total value of the education intervention project stands at ₦23.01 billion.
The textbooks, to be procured in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission and the World Bank, will cover Numeracy, Literacy, Mathematics, English Language and Basic Science.
Oyelade explained that successful procurement and distribution of the learning materials would qualify Oyo State for a reward-based disbursement of $2 per student per subject under the project’s results-based financing arrangement.
The council also approved the payment of $250,000 to support programmes under the African Continental Free Trade Area initiative, aimed at positioning Oyo State as a preferred destination for trade and investment opportunities across Africa.
In addition, the council approved ₦5.91 billion for the implementation of the 2026 work plan of the Health Insurance and Food Security components of the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery programme.
The commissioner said the approval was intended to sustain government interventions designed to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal and prevailing economic hardship on residents.
Meanwhile, the council appealed to the Nigerian Union of Teachers to reconsider its action that has disrupted academic activities in some schools, while assuring residents that efforts were ongoing to resolve the security challenges arising from the abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
The council also congratulated Governor Seyi Makinde on the qualification of Shooting Stars Sports Club for continental competition after 27 years and pledged government support to ensure the Lekan Salami Stadium is ready to host the matches.
