World Sickle Cell Day: Unregulated Drugs, Herbal Mixtures May Send Patients to Early Grave, Proper Healthcare Will Improve Longevity — Experts Warn
As Nigeria marks World Sickle Cell Day, Medical experts have urged intending couples to undergo genotype testing before marriage as part of efforts to reduce the prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and prevent the birth of children affected by the condition.
The latest comes from a Senior Registrar in the Department of Paediatrics at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr. Ologunore Olufisayo Christopher, in commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day, observed annually on June 19 to raise global awareness about the disease.
He explained that genotype compatibility remains one of the most effective preventive measures against sickle cell disease, stressing the need for couples to make informed reproductive decisions to avoid avoidable emotional and financial burdens on families.
Dr. Ologunore also encouraged individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease to remain hopeful and resilient, noting that advancements in medical care, early diagnosis, and improved management have significantly enhanced life expectancy and quality of life for patients.
World Sickle Cell Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight Sickle Cell Disease as a major global public health and genetic concern, with the annual observance aimed at promoting awareness, prevention, and support for affected individuals and families worldwide.
