Just In: Anxiety in UI as 300-Level Law Student Goes Missing While Returning from Scripture Union Conference in Imo
There is growing concern within the University of Ibadan (UI) community following the disappearance of a 300-level female law student, identified simply as Tomisin, while returning from a Scripture Union conference in Imo State.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) confirmed the development on Friday and appealed for calm as efforts intensify to secure her safe return.
In a statement issued by the SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, Tomisin was said to have travelled on a religious retreat alongside the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.
Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and is also the Vice-President of the Scripture Union, University of Ibadan chapter.
The union, however, dismissed reports circulating on social media that eight University of Ibadan students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for.
According to Adeboye, the Students’ Union has commenced necessary engagements to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and has established contact with relevant religious bodies and security agencies to facilitate prompt intervention.
Reports indicated that Tomisin was returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when communication with her was lost.
Concern over her whereabouts deepened after she failed to sit for her faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Further information revealed that another University of Ibadan student from the Department of Music, who attended the conference, returned safely. However, the vehicle conveying the National General Director, Engr. Cosmos, reportedly remains unaccounted for.
Confirming the development, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ademola Lewis, said the university was aware of the incident, although the institution had not been informed in advance about the trip.
He noted that efforts were ongoing to ensure the student’s safe return and urged members of the university community to remain calm while avoiding the spread of unverified information capable of escalating tensions.
The incident has sparked anxiety among students, staff and members of the university community, who continue to hope for Tomisin’s safe rescue and reunion with her family.
