US, Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as Both Sides Prepare for Showdown

The United States and Iran have exchanged fresh military strikes despite ongoing efforts to preserve a fragile ceasefire and advance diplomatic negotiations aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) disclosed on Wednesday that it carried out overnight self-defence strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island following what it described as attempted attacks by the Islamic Republic against US interests across the region.

According to CENTCOM, US forces had earlier intercepted and disabled an unladen oil tanker that was reportedly heading toward an Iranian port in the Arabian Gulf. Iranian authorities are said to have cited the action against the vessel as the catalyst for the latest escalation between the two countries.

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it targeted a US-Israeli vessel with naval missiles before American forces struck an IRGC communications tower located south of Qeshm Island. The IRGC further stated that it launched a series of missiles and drones at US military installations, including an airbase, the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and helicopters stationed in another country within the region.

The renewed exchange of hostilities underscores the volatility of the situation despite ongoing diplomatic engagements. While both sides continue to signal support for ceasefire efforts, the latest strikes have raised fresh concerns about the potential for a broader regional confrontation.
