Nigeria Commemorates World Bicycle Day Amid Growing Concerns Over Rising Fuel Costs to Power Cars
Nigeria on Wednesday joined the global community to commemorate World Bicycle Day 2026, with stakeholders highlighting the importance of cycling as a sustainable, affordable and healthy means of transportation amid growing concerns over rising fuel costs, environmental pollution and urban traffic congestion.
Observed annually on June 3, World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to recognize the bicycle as a simple, reliable and environmentally friendly mode of transport that contributes to sustainable development, improved public health and social inclusion.
The day is celebrated worldwide through advocacy campaigns, cycling events and public awareness programmes.
In Nigeria, the commemoration was marked by activities spearheaded by government agencies, cycling associations and advocacy groups aimed at encouraging the adoption of non-motorized transportation.
Major cities, including Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt, also hosted awareness rallies, community rides and public sensitization campaigns to promote cycling culture and improve road safety for riders.
