‎NUT, NLC, NANS Stage Peaceful Protest to Governor Makinde’s Office, Demand Swift Rescue of Oriire Pupils, Teachers

‎Hundreds of teachers, workers and students on Tuesday converged on the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, in a peaceful protest over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, demanding urgent action to secure their release.

‎The protesters, led by the Oyo State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Fatai Hassan; Oyo NLC Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins; and the National President of NANS, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye, marched to the Governor’s Office where they expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of more than 30 pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in the Ahoro-Ile and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government.

‎Addressing Governor Seyi Makinde during the protest, the Oyo State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Fatai Hassan, said the abduction had thrown affected communities into fear and uncertainty, insisting that teachers across the state will not resume duties until the abducted pupils and their colleagues regain their freedom.

‎Also speaking, The NLC Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins; and the National President of NANS, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye, described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, adding that Oyo State had long been regarded as one of the most peaceful states in the country.

‎They, however, urged the Federal, State governments and security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the victims are rescued unharmed.

‎Responding, Governor Makinde assured the protesters that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies and relevant stakeholders, is doing everything possible to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

‎Makinde also urged Nigerians to remain united in the face of insecurity, warning against attempts to exploit the tragic incident for political gains.

‎According to him, the focus of all stakeholders should be on ensuring the safe return of the victims and preventing future occurrences.

‎The governor’s meeting with the protesters came barely two days after a high-powered Federal Government delegation led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, visited the affected communities in Oriire Local Government Area to assess the situation and reassure residents of ongoing efforts to rescue the victims.

‎As at the time of filing this report, all public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State remain closed as the demonstration and rescue efforts continue
