Federal Government Disburses #11.8bn Loan to 6,842 Tertiary Institution Workers
The Federal Government has disbursed a total of N11.8 billion to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across Nigerian tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF).
The beneficiaries were drawn from 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.
Launched in August 2025, the TISSF is a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The programme is designed to improve the welfare, career development, and financial stability of staff in tertiary institutions by providing interest-free loans.
Eligible staff members can access loans of up to #10 million at zero per cent interest.
According to data on the Federal Ministry of Education’s website, the programme has so far recorded 34,000 verified applicants from 219 institutions. Staff of federal universities make up the majority of applicants at 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics with 23 per cent and colleges of education with 18 per cent.
In addition to the loan scheme, the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative has also distributed 240 e-tricycles across 12 institutions to support mobility and operations.
Key highlights of the programme include:
- Loans of up to N10 million per staff member at zero interest
- N11.8 billion disbursed to 6,842 beneficiaries across 141 institutions
- 34,000 verified applicants from 219 institutions
- Eligibility requirement of a minimum of five years to retirement
Other initiatives under the programme include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system introduced earlier in 2026 to enhance teachers’ professional skills, and the School Safety Portal, developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to strengthen school security management.
The EduRevamp platform, launched during the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026, has recorded 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules. The platform offers audio and video lessons, case studies, and certification opportunities for continuous professional development.
Meanwhile, the School Safety Portal established under the School Safety Act of 2025 currently contains data on over 156,000 geolocated schools across the country.
