Youth Political Participation Declines Despite Growing Awareness
Despite increasing political awareness among young Nigerians, their participation in mainstream politics remains low, raising concerns about the future of the country’s democratic process.
This is particularly significant as youths make up a large percentage of Nigeria’s population, and many believe their active involvement is crucial to political stability, inclusion, and national development.
Across the country, debates continue among stakeholders over the widening gap between political awareness and actual participation.
While many young people are more informed about governance, elections, and national issues, their presence in party structures, electoral activities, and key decision-making platforms remains limited.
In separate reactions, many youths say their reluctance to engage actively in politics is caused by several factors, including a lack of trust in the political system, limited opportunities within political parties, and concerns over safety during political activities.
Others say repeated disappointments from previous elections have deepened political apathy, leaving many with the belief that their involvement does not significantly influence outcomes.
Financial barriers have also been identified as a major challenge. Respondents noted that the high cost of political participation and the growing monetisation of the political process discourage many young Nigerians from taking part.
Concerns over political violence, intimidation, and the negative image often associated with politics were also highlighted.
They, however, expressed optimism that if current political office holders address these concerns and create a safer, more transparent environment, youth participation would become more feasible and attractive.
Elder statesmen and political observers across various groups also noted that although young Nigerians remain highly active in civic discussions, especially on social media, converting that energy into formal political participation remains a major challenge.
