Federal Government Approves ₦10 Billion Housing Loan Scheme for Civil Servants

The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme to help civil servants become homeowners, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced on Friday in Abuja.

Speaking at an ongoing press briefing, Walson-Jack said the programme would be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

She explained that the initiative is intended to improve stability, morale, and productivity within the civil service by giving workers easier access to home ownership.

“The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme to improve access to home ownership for civil servants. This loan will be facilitated through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board,” she said.

Walson-Jack noted that owning a home can have a positive impact on workers’ confidence and performance.

“There is a saying that a person who owns their own home stands differently. When a civil servant knows that their family has a place they can truly call their own, they come to work with more confidence, stability, focus, and purpose,” she added.

She described the housing scheme as part of a broader reform agenda and not merely a welfare package. According to her, the Tinubu administration believes that a well-supported civil servant is more effective, and an effective civil service is essential to building a stronger Nigeria.

Walson-Jack also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise the public service, including the transition to a digital, paperless, transparent, and innovation-driven system.

“As Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, I am committed to ensuring that every civil servant earns better and grows better, with the skills, tools, and institutional support needed to reach their full potential,” she said.

She further stressed the importance of collaboration among ministries, departments, and agencies in achieving the current reforms, crediting key institutions such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation for their roles.

“This is the power of collaboration across government not working in silos, but institutions working together, each contributing its statutory mandate toward a shared national purpose,” she said.

Walson-Jack urged all MDAs to sustain this spirit of cooperation beyond welfare matters and extend it to service delivery, policy implementation, and other areas of governance.

Looking ahead to Workers’ Day on May 1, she said this year’s celebration would be especially meaningful for civil servants, noting that there is now clearer evidence that their contributions are being recognised at the highest levels.

She added that Workers’ Day should not only reflect on past struggles but also renew national commitments to fairness, justice, and gratitude for workers.

Praising civil servants for their resilience and dedication, Walson-Jack said their sacrifices, professionalism, and long hours of service had not gone unnoticed.
