18 Killed as Gunmen Attack Zamfara Community
At least 18 people have been killed following an attack by suspected gunmen on Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to reports, the assailants — said to be more than 80 in number — stormed the community on motorcycles around 9 p.m. on Friday, firing sporadically as residents fled for safety.
Mahmud Dantawasa, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Information and Culture, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
He expressed the government’s condolences to the affected community and families of the victims, describing the attack as tragic and deeply disturbing.
“The Zamfara State Government extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the people of Bunkasau in Zarumai district, Bukkuyum Local Government Area, over the horrific attack that resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property,” the statement read.
“This incident has shocked the government and the entire people of the state. Such violence has left many families in pain, grief, and uncertainty.”
Dantawasa said the government stands in solidarity with those affected and prayed for the repose of the victims.
“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives those who lost their lives, grants them eternal rest, and gives their families the strength and patience to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
The commissioner reiterated the commitment of the state government, under Governor Dauda Lawal, to tackle insecurity and prevent further attacks.
He said measures are being intensified to strengthen security, restore peace, and safeguard lives and property across the state.
Dantawasa also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information.
“The government calls on the public to remain united, patient, and supportive of security agencies by sharing accurate information that can help address the ongoing security challenges,” he said.
