UNIJOS Orders Emergency Evacuation Of Students As Tension Rises
Students of the University of Jos have been ordered to vacate their hostels following renewed security concerns in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The directive was issued on Wednesday by the Vice Chancellor, Tanko Ishaya, through a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu. The evacuation was described as a precautionary measure in response to escalating tension around the campus.
The university said the decision followed reports of sporadic violence in parts of the city, with unconfirmed claims of casualties, which raised fears over the safety of students and staff.
To support the exercise, the Plateau State Government provided transportation for students, including special arrangements allowing movement during curfew hours. According to the university, students within Jos and nearby areas were to be evacuated immediately, while those living farther away were scheduled to leave the following day.
The management assured that security personnel had been deployed to safeguard the institution and urged students and parents to remain calm as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the area.
