“You Wanted Money, I Wanted Power” — Wike Fires Back at Governor Makinde
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a direct swipe at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, framing their political disagreement as a clash of motives money versus power.
Speaking at the 107th National Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wike accused Makinde of approaching politics with the mindset of a contractor rather than a strategist.
“You wanted money; I wanted power. Stay where you are as a contractor,” Wike said.
The comment appeared to be a pointed response to Makinde’s earlier claims about a meeting involving Wike and President Bola Tinubu, where Makinde alleged that Wike pledged political support for the president ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike dismissed those claims as false and warned against entering political battles without the strength to sustain them.
“It is unfortunate that a fight you cannot fight, you started. Politics is not contract work,” he added.
By drawing a sharp line between financial interests and political ambition, Wike suggested that success in politics is driven by influence and long-term strategy not monetary gain.
He also cautioned party members against unnecessary confrontations, urging them to remain focused and disciplined as the party prepares for its upcoming national convention.
Wike concluded by calling for unity within the party, but made it clear that loyalty and commitment not personal gain would determine who remains relevant going forward.
