Morocco Shifts Focus to Hosting 2026 WAFCON After AFCON Appeal Victory
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) says it is now focused on hosting the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a favourable ruling on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
The federation made this known while reacting to the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Board, which overturned the outcome of the AFCON 2025 final and awarded the title to Morocco.
The final, played in Rabat on January 18, had initially ended in a 1–0 victory for Senegal after extra time. However, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the match after players briefly walked off the pitch in protest of a late penalty decision.
The ruling awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory in line with tournament regulations.
Morocco had earlier challenged CAF’s Disciplinary Committee decision, which dismissed its protest seeking a forfeiture ruling.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Moroccan FA said its appeal was not intended to question the “sporting performance” of its opponents, but rather to uphold “respect for AFCON regulations, integrity, and fairness.”
The federation added that Morocco now “looks forward with confidence” to hosting the 2026 WAFCON, as well as participating in upcoming global competitions.
The 2026 WAFCON was initially scheduled to take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3 but was postponed by CAF to July 25, citing unforeseen circumstances and the need to ensure the tournament’s success.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are the defending champions, having defeated Morocco in the previous final to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
