A friendly table tennis match between Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and Umo Eno stole the spotlight during the First Lady’s visit to Akwa Ibom State, as she displayed impressive skills to defeat the governor in a lively and entertaining game.
The light-hearted contest took place shortly after the inauguration of the Oluremi Tinubu Senior Citizens Centre in Ikono Local Government Area.
What began as a casual demonstration quickly turned competitive, drawing cheers and laughter from officials and guests who gathered around the table.
Mrs. Tinubu showed remarkable agility and precision, returning several difficult shots and ultimately outplaying Governor Eno, who struggled to match the First Lady’s pace and control.
The friendly match quickly became the highlight of the event, with spectators applauding the First Lady’s sporting spirit and skill.
Governor Eno, smiling after the match, acknowledged her victory and joked about needing more practice.
The sporting moment added a relaxed atmosphere to an otherwise formal event marking the inauguration of the Oluremi Tinubu Senior Citizens Centre, an ultra-modern geriatric facility established to support elderly citizens in the state.
Speaking after the commissioning, the First Lady urged the leadership of the National Assembly to enact legislation that would strengthen welfare programmes for senior citizens across the country.
She commended Governor Eno for prioritising the well-being of elderly residents and for completing the project, which was originally envisioned by the late First Lady of the state, Patience Umo Eno.
According to her, societies that honour their elderly citizens demonstrate responsibility, gratitude and continuity.
Governor Eno, in his remarks, thanked the First Lady for honouring the state with her presence and personally inaugurating the centre named after her.
He described the project as the brainchild of his late wife and said it aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Initiative, particularly in the area of elderly care.
The governor also announced plans to replicate similar facilities across the state’s three senatorial districts and pledged to send a bill to the State House of Assembly aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of elderly citizens.
Beyond the speeches and formalities, however, it was the spirited table tennis match between the First Lady and the governor that many attendees will remember most; a moment of friendly competition that brought laughter and excitement to the event.
