NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application Deadline Amid Surge in Nationwide Interest
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal following a significant rise in awareness and nationwide demand for the scheme.
In a statement issued on March 2, 2026, in Abuja, the Fund announced that the decision came after strong feedback from students and key stakeholders across the country. The portal was initially scheduled to close on February 27, 2026, but the extension will now allow additional time for eligible applicants to complete and submit their applications, pending further management decisions.
According to the statement, the extension is specifically aimed at accommodating students who require more time to finalize their applications, prospective applicants who only recently became aware of the scheme during nationwide sensitization campaigns, institutions commencing their 2025/2026 academic session, and institutions that have yet to submit their verified student lists.
Speaking on the development, NELFUND’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable access to education financing. He noted that sensitization efforts across the six geopolitical zones have significantly increased awareness and participation.
“In line with our mandate to expand access to tertiary education financing, we have approved an extension to ensure that all eligible students have a fair and equal opportunity to apply,” he said.
NELFUND also advised institutions that have not commenced the 2025/2026 academic session to submit an official request for extension, accompanied by their approved academic calendar, for consideration.
Students were strongly encouraged to take advantage of the extended window to complete their applications via the official NELFUND portal before it closes.
The Fund reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the delivery of sustainable student financing solutions aimed at removing financial barriers to higher education in Nigeria.
