Breaking: Nigeria to Have State Police Before 2027 General Elections, National Assembly to Begin Deliberation This Week
The Senate has pledged to conclude work on a constitutional amendment to enable the creation of state police before the end of 2026.
On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu urged the leadership of the 10th Senate to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for the establishment of state police.
Two days later, on Friday, the president made a similar request to the House of Representatives, asking lawmakers to revise the constitution to allow for the creation of a decentralised policing system.
Speaking to Punch Newspapers, Yemi Adaramodu, spokesperson of the Senate, said the upper chamber would resume deliberations on the constitutional review once plenary reconvenes this week.
