“A Song I Nearly Shelved Took Me to the World Stage” — Musiliu Haruna Ishola on Soyoyo; Says Thousands of Lyrics Still in Archive
Legendary Apala musician Musiliu Haruna Ishola, son of the iconic Haruna Ishola, has revealed that his blockbuster album Soyoyo was almost discarded because he disliked it from the very beginning.
In a recent interview, Musiliu disclosed that the album now regarded as one of the best-selling Apala records of all time was the result of mistakes made during the recording process, as the original script was not strictly followed.
He explained that after the session, he instructed the producer not to release the recording to marketers because he was dissatisfied with it.
However, those present in the studio persuaded him otherwise. Ironically, the song he expected to be “dead on arrival” went on to catapult him onto the global stage.
Reflecting on the experience, Musiliu described the success of Soyoyo as an act of God.
He also revealed that he remains in possession of thousands of song lyrics composed by his late father, Haruna Ishola, noting that he could never exhaust them in his lifetime.
Musiliu further stated that he has not released any songs of his own composition, emphasizing that all the works currently attributed to him were written by his father.
“I was the one who used to write down the lyrics of the songs composed by my father,” he said. “As a result, I am the custodian of his masterpieces.”
