Oyo Residents Call for Accelerated Development as State Marks 50th Anniversary
As Oyo State marks its 50th anniversary, residents have called on the government to intensify developmental projects across the state to match its growing population and economic potential.
Many believe the golden jubilee presents an opportunity to assess past achievements while setting clearer priorities for the future.
Created on February 3, 1976, from the former Western State during the military administration of General Murtala Mohammed, Oyo State has grown into one of Nigeria’s most prominent sub-national entities.
The state currently spans about 28,454 square kilometres and is made up of 33 Local Government Areas.
Over the past five decades, Oyo State has been governed by 20 administrators and governors, both military and civilian, culminating in the present administration in 2026.
Ibadan, the state capital, remains one of its most defining features, boasting the largest metropolitan geographical area in West Africa, covering between 3,080 and 3,850 square kilometres.
As part of activities marking the golden jubilee, Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday, January 26, 2026, formally declared the Oyo at 50 celebration open.
Speaking on the significance of the celebration, the designer of the Oyo at 50 logo, Olaleye Ajayi, said the state has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation over the years.
Cross section of residents who spoke with Ilaji FM News acknowledged the state’s achievements in various sectors but stressed that several critical areas still require attention and improvement.
They also noted that sustained development of rural communities is essential to reduce population pressure on urban centres and promote balanced growth across the state.
In his message to the people, Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, said the true strength of the state lies in its people, describing the golden jubilee not only as a celebration but also as a moment of reflection on the journey so far.
The governor added that both the government and the citizens are committed to ensuring that the next 50 years usher in greater prosperity, development, and progress for Oyo State.
Recalling how he benefited from the state’s free education policy, which he said played a key role in shaping his life, Governor Makinde pledged to continue giving back through impactful governance and people-oriented policies.
As residents anticipate accelerated development across the state, activities marking the Oyo at 50 celebration are expected to come to a close today, February 3, 2026.
