Video: Interior Minister, Tunji-Ojo Warns Immigration Officers Against VIP Preference, Extortion
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has warned officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) against prioritizing VIP passport applications over those of other Nigerians, insisting that all citizens must be treated equally in the passport issuance process.
The minister issued the warning while addressing immigration officers during an inspection of a passport office, where he expressed concern over delays and preferential treatment given to certain applicants.
He stressed that no Nigerian should be regarded as more important than another, regardless of social status or position.
Tunji-Ojo reminded officers that the passport is a national document meant for all citizens and not a privilege reserved for a few.

He directed that officers focus on efficient service delivery for everyone, noting that Nigerians often sacrifice time and resources to obtain the travel document.
He also criticized operational inefficiencies that cause long waiting hours, stating that proper coordination and adherence to procedures would significantly reduce delays.
According to him, passport enrolment processes can be completed within a short time if officers work diligently and responsibly.
The minister further cautioned against the collection of unauthorized fees, emphasizing that applicants should not be asked to pay anything beyond the officially approved passport charges.
He warned that any officer found exploiting Nigerians through illegal charges or deliberate delays would face disciplinary action.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to reforming passport services, improving efficiency, and restoring public confidence in the Nigeria Immigration Service.
He urged officers to see themselves as public servants whose duty is to serve Nigerians with fairness, professionalism, and respect.
