Instead of Dele Alake To Implement Oyo State Lasting Solution Policy to End Illegal Mining, He went Ahead to Establish Mining Marshal__ Governor Makinde
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called for a more lasting and well-thought-out policy solution to tackle illegal mining across the country, saying enforcement alone cannot solve the problem.
He made the remarks while reflecting on earlier discussions with the Federal Government on how best to address the growing menace.
Makinde revealed that he had recommended a comprehensive policy framework that would deal with the root causes of illegal mining, an idea he said was acknowledged by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the governor, the president showed understanding of the need for a sustainable approach rather than short-term fixes.
However, the Oyo State governor expressed concern over the direction later taken by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake. He noted that instead of implementing the proposed policy solution, the ministry went ahead to establish a Mining Marshal to confront illegal mining activities.
Makinde questioned the effectiveness of the move, pointing out that the number of Mining Marshals reportedly deployed is too small to make a real impact nationwide.
He asked rhetorically how such a limited force could adequately cover the vast expanse of the country and effectively police mining activities in all affected areas.
The governor maintained that while enforcement has its place, Nigeria needs a broader strategy that combines regulation, community engagement, and economic alternatives for those involved in illegal mining.
He said only a balanced and inclusive policy would deliver a long-term solution to the challenge.
