2027: APC Governors Reject Alliances, Back Only Party Candidates

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, resolving to support only candidates fielded by the party.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the Progressives Governors Forum held on Monday night at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, where the governors expressed concern that alliances or coalitions could weaken the APC’s electoral chances, including President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election.

The governors’ position comes amid the movement of some former APC chieftains who lost out in the party’s primaries to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where some have secured tickets to contest various elective positions.

Among them are Senator Saliu Mustapha, who lost the Kwara Central senatorial ticket to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq before joining the PDP; Kolo Jiya from Patigi local government, who secured the Kwara North senatorial ticket on the PDP platform; and former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, who emerged as the PDP governorship candidate in Gombe State.

Also in Cross River State, the PDP governorship candidate, Arthur Davis, is set to challenge the incumbent APC governor, Bassey Otu.

However, reading the resolutions of the Progressives Governors Forum, its Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, said the governors unanimously resolved against participating in or supporting any alliance capable of undermining the APC or its candidates.

Uzodinma said, “The Forum unanimously resolved that its members won’t participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.

“In other words, the Forum has no intention of supporting anybody at any level that’s not an APC candidate because our candidates are being sponsored by our party.

“The governors affirmed their commitment exclusively to all APC candidates. Any arrangement that can create confusion, divided loyalty or competing interests will not be entertained.

“All levels of the party campaign architecture must align with the expectations of Mr President and objectives of the APC.”

The resolution effectively places the APC governors behind the party’s candidates across the various levels of the 2027 elections and signals the forum’s opposition to arrangements that could result in divided support within the party.
