Igbeti Attack: Oyo Government Deploys Surveillance Aircraft, Arrests Five Suspects
The Oyo State Government has intensified security operations in Igbeti and adjoining communities following the attack on a military camp on the outskirts of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area, with at least five suspected terrorists arrested.
The Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who visited the scene on Monday, less than 24 hours after the attack, said Governor Seyi Makinde had assured residents that his administration would not abandon them.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who accompanied the Deputy Governor on the assessment visit, Lawal said the government remained committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
During an inspection of the affected military facility, the Deputy Governor was briefed by the Commanding Officer, 81 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Innocent Asogwa, who disclosed that no fewer than 120 soldiers had been deployed into the bush to track down the fleeing terrorists.
The Commanding Officer also explained that the fire which destroyed part of the building and a vehicle at the camp was caused by the terrorists’ use of grenade launchers, which ignited cooking gas cylinders within the premises.
Oyelade said the military had so far arrested at least five suspects allegedly involved in the attack, noting that the suspects were found wearing military uniforms.
He added that more arrests were expected as security operatives continued their search and intelligence-gathering operations in the area.
Speaking on the state’s newly procured surveillance aircraft, Lawal said the aircraft was being deployed for reconnaissance and security operations across the state.
He explained that the aircraft could not remain airborne permanently but would conduct regular random sorties and remain available for security operations whenever required.
The Deputy Governor, who was accompanied by some local government chairmen and the Onigbeti of Igbeti, also announced the establishment of an emergency committee comprising the five local government councils adjoining the affected area.
The committee covers Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo local government areas and is expected to immediately identify and provide the needs of security personnel operating in the communities while liaising with the state government for prompt intervention.
Lawal said, “As a responsible government, we will continue to play our part in ensuring that our people are safe.”
He expressed relief that no casualties had been recorded in the attack and said the government welcomed the development.
Also in the Deputy Governor’s entourage were the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Professor Saliu Adelabu, and the Senior Special Assistant on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya.
