Oranyan Market Fire Incident: Traders Allege Sabotage, Seek Oyo Government Intervention
The Chairman of Oranyan Market, Mr. Ayobami Sanusi, has explained the circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak that completely razed a second-hand clothing section of the Oranyan popular market in Ibadan, Oyo State, as affected traders appealed to the state government for urgent assistance.
Sanusi said the affected section of the market was completely destroyed by the fire, leaving several traders without their shops, goods and means of livelihood.
According to him, efforts to put out the fire were complicated by the electrical wire connections in the market, which he said contributed to the spread of the inferno to other sections.
The market chairman lamented the extent of the destruction, saying the affected traders had lost their sources of livelihood and were now faced with huge debts.
Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions among traders at the market following the incident.
While some traders alleged that the fire might have been deliberately started by what they described as enemies of the market, others appealed to the Oyo State Government to urgently come to their aid.
The traders called for government intervention to support those affected, saying the fire had wiped out their businesses and means of livelihood.
The fire, which reportedly started last night, affected several sections of the market, with traders dealing in gold, furniture, second-hand clothing and other goods among those whose shops were destroyed.
The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services, Morof Akinwande, had earlier confirmed the incident.
Akinwande, however, cautioned against putting a figure on the number of shops destroyed at this stage, saying the extent of the damage would only be determined after a proper assessment and investigation into the fire outbreak.
