Flamingos Beat Mexico 2-1 to Reach U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have qualified for the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter.
Mexico started the match brightly but struggled to break through Nigeria’s resolute defence as the Flamingos gradually settled into the contest.
Nigeria took the lead five minutes before half-time through Oluebube Umejiaku, who fired home from inside the box to register her third goal of the tournament.
The Flamingos maintained their attacking momentum after the restart, putting Mexico under sustained pressure and creating opportunities to extend their advantage.
Their efforts paid off in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan unleashed a powerful strike to make it 2-0 and strengthen Nigeria’s grip on the encounter.
Mexico refused to surrender and reduced the deficit through Emily Delgado deep into stoppage time, setting up a tense finish.
However, the Nigerian youngsters held on to secure a 2-1 victory and book their place among the tournament’s last eight teams.
The victory takes the Flamingos into the quarter-finals, where they will face Venezuela for a place in the semi-finals.
