Nigeria Wakes Up as FEC Approves Committee to Draft Five-Year Strategic Defence Plan

The Federal Executive Council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday approved the establishment of a committee to draft a five-year strategic defence cooperation plan for Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the council meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Idris, the committee will comprise the National Security Adviser, the two Ministers of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff and all service chiefs, as well as the Director-General of the Department of State Services and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.

He added that the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security would provide the secretariat for the committee.

“The council today also approved the establishment of a drafting committee for a five-year strategic defence cooperation plan,” Idris said.

The minister explained that the committee had been given 90 days to complete its assignment and submit its report to President Tinubu.

“They have 90 days from today to submit their report to Mr President,” he stated.

The move is expected to provide a structured framework for strengthening Nigeria’s defence cooperation and improving coordination among key national security institutions over the next five years.
