Osun Police Warn Against Forceful Takeover of Local Government Areas
The Osun State Police Command has warned individuals, political groups and other associations against attempting to forcefully take over the affairs or premises of local government areas in the state.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Samuel Erale.
The Command said it had received reports of alleged plans by some individuals and groups to forcefully take control of local government areas despite the matter being before the courts.
It warned that any attempt to take over local government facilities through force would amount to self-help and constitute a serious breach of public peace.
Ojelabi said, “No individual, political group, or association has the right to resort to self-help or the use of force to assume control of any Local Government Area or public institution while judicial proceedings are ongoing.”
The police urged all parties involved in the matter to exercise restraint and patience, stressing that the courts should be allowed to determine the issue in accordance with the law.
The Command further warned that anyone who attempts to forcibly occupy, disrupt or take control of local government facilities would be arrested and prosecuted.
“Any attempt to forcibly occupy or disrupt Local Government facilities will be viewed as a serious breach of the peace and dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, including arrest and prosecution of persons found culpable,” the statement read in part.
The police also called on parents, community and traditional leaders, political leaders, youth leaders and other stakeholders to caution their supporters against actions capable of threatening the peace and security of the state.
Eralе congratulated residents of Osun State on what he described as the successful and peaceful conclusion of the recent governorship election, while commending stakeholders for their participation in the democratic process.
He urged residents and political actors to remain calm, respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its course without interference.
“The Police will continue to protect lives and property and maintain peace and public order throughout the State,” Ojelabi stated.
