Fayose, Others Inaugurated as REA Governing Board Members

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the Rural Electrification Agency, with former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, serving as Chairman.

Tegbe inaugurated the board in Abuja and charged its members to ensure that their decisions are guided by their impact on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, members of the board, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of REA, as well as officials of the ministry.

Tegbe said the constitution of the board was consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening governance and accountability across public institutions.

He described the Rural Electrification Agency as an institution focused on expanding opportunities, noting that every mini-grid, solar home system, electrified market, school, health centre and farm represents an investment in human capital and economic inclusion.

The minister pointed to REA’s existing programmes, including the Energising Education Programme, Energising Economies Programme, Energising Agriculture Programme and the Africa Mini-Grids Programme, as evidence of the agency’s strategy to expand electricity access.

He noted that the newly constituted board, established under Section 130 of the Electricity Act, was assuming office at a defining moment for the agency.

Tegbe also explained the distinction between the board’s non-executive responsibility for strategic direction and oversight and management’s responsibility for day-to-day operations.

He said the board would meet quarterly to review performance, while management would retain operational latitude between meetings, subject to accountability.

The minister commended Fayose’s record as a former governor of Ekiti State and expressed confidence in the capacity of the new board to contribute to the development of the electricity sector.

Responding on behalf of the board, Fayose described President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Tegbe as Minister of Power as an indication of the administration’s determination to address Nigeria’s longstanding power challenges.

Fayose described Tegbe as a technocrat with strong technical and managerial competence, saying his appointment had brought renewed focus to efforts to transform the power sector.

He assured that the new REA board would work closely with the minister and other stakeholders to support the administration’s efforts to improve electricity access and strengthen the sector.
