’Wole Wole’ Is Back: Oyo Government Begins House to House Waste Bin Enforcement, Gives Residents One Month to Comply
The Oyo State Government has announced the commencement of the enforcement of mandatory waste bin provision for all residential and commercial buildings across the state, giving residents and property owners a one month grace period to comply before full enforcement begins on September 1, 2026.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this while addressing journalists in his office on Monday.
He said the directive is part of the state government’s renewed commitment to strengthening environmental sanitation, promoting proper waste management and ensuring cleaner communities across Oyo State.
According to the commissioner, every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and commercial plaza is required to provide appropriate waste bins that correspond with the size of the property, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.
Aderinto explained that the initiative is aimed at eliminating indiscriminate waste disposal, improving public hygiene and creating a healthier environment for residents. He noted that the government remains committed to implementing sustainable waste management policies capable of protecting public health and preserving the environment.
He further directed residents and business owners to patronise only government accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) responsible for waste collection and evacuation, warning that the use of unapproved waste collectors or illegal waste disposal methods would attract sanctions in accordance with the state’s environmental laws.
The commissioner emphasized that the one month grace period is intended to allow residents, businesses and property owners adequate time to procure suitable waste bins and make the necessary arrangements with accredited waste management operators before enforcement begins.
He reaffirmed the administration’s determination to sustain a cleaner and healthier Oyo State through strict compliance with environmental regulations, urging residents to support the initiative by embracing responsible waste disposal practices.
The state government expressed confidence that the enforcement exercise would significantly improve sanitation standards, reduce environmental pollution and enhance the overall quality of life for residents across the state. It added that environmental officials would begin monitoring compliance immediately after the expiration of the grace period on September 1, 2026.
