Oyo Pensioners Threaten Protest Over Alleged Delay in Implementing Makinde’s Pension Directive

‎The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, has threatened to stage peaceful protests at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH Teaching Hospital), Ogbomoso, and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, over the alleged failure of the institutions to implement Governor Seyi Makinde’s approved pension increases for retirees.

‎The union said the protests would commence on August 18, 2026, if the management of the two institutions failed to comply with the governor’s directive, describing the delay as an act of disobedience to constituted authority.

‎Addressing journalists at the union’s headquarters in Agbarigo, Ibadan, on Monday, the State Secretary of the union, Comrade (Dr.) Olusegun Abatan, said Governor Makinde had, in January, approved a comprehensive review of pensions in the state, including a minimum monthly pension of N25,000 for the least-paid retirees and the implementation of outstanding pension adjustments.

‎According to Abatan, the governor also approved the implementation of the 33 per cent pension increase, the 2019 consequential adjustment, the 20 per cent pension increase approved in January 2024, as well as the balance of the N17,500 pension increase approved in August 2024 for eligible pensioners.

‎He alleged that while most government agencies implemented the directive without waiting for a formal circular, some tertiary institutions initially insisted on receiving an implementation circular before taking action.
