Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber, Recover Stolen Motorcycle in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle in Ibadan following a swift response to a distress call.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, after the command received credible information that a commercial motorcyclist had been attacked and dispossessed of his motorcycle along Adeniji Estate in the Apata area of Ibadan.
According to the statement, the victim, identified as Muhammadu Kamilu, was allegedly attacked with an iron hammer by a passenger who subsequently fled with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.
“Acting promptly on the actionable intelligence, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were immediately deployed to the scene. Their swift intervention culminated in the arrest of the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, and the recovery of the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as the iron hammer allegedly used to perpetrate the attack,” the statement read.
The police said Kamilu sustained injuries during the attack, while a good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, was also injured after attempting to rescue the victim from the suspect.
Both victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where they received medical treatment.
According to the command, the suspect confessed during interrogation to operating as a lone robber who specialised in attacking and robbing commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and its environs.
“Subsequent interrogation of the suspect yielded useful information, as he confessed to operating as a lone armed robber specialising in attacking and robbing commercial motorcyclists within Ibadan and its environs,” the statement added.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s possible involvement in other robbery cases and to recover additional exhibits linked to his alleged criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, commended the vigilance of residents and the bravery of the good Samaritan, noting that timely information from members of the public greatly contributed to the successful operation.
He urged residents to remain security conscious and continue supporting the police by promptly reporting suspicious persons and activities through the appropriate channels.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that it would continue to deploy intelligence-driven and proactive policing strategies to identify, apprehend and prosecute criminal elements operating in the state.
