BREAKING: House of Reps Withdraws Own State Police Bill, Considers Tinubu’s Proposed Version
The House of Representatives has withdrawn its proposed constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, opting instead to consider a similar proposal transmitted by President Bola Tinubu.
The development emerged during Tuesday’s plenary, where lawmakers gave the Executive-sponsored state police bill its first and second readings before referring it to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative consideration.
The decision effectively puts the House’s earlier proposal on hold as lawmakers shift attention to the Executive-backed constitutional amendment.
The committee is expected to conduct a detailed review of the bill’s provisions before presenting its report to the House for debate and possible passage.
The Executive-sponsored bill forms part of ongoing efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through the establishment of state police.
If approved by the National Assembly and endorsed by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, the legislation could pave the way for the creation of state-controlled police forces across the country.
