NYSC reforms: Adire fabric to replace Khaki as uniform
The Federal Government has announced that the traditional khaki uniform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme and promoting indigenous industries.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the disclosure on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
According to the minister, the decision is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen local production and ensure that public spending directly supports the Nigerian economy.
“It is Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have producers in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, and we have textile industries. Let’s put our money back into the country,” Olawande said.
He explained that the new uniforms would be produced locally, a move expected to stimulate the nation’s textile industry, create jobs and encourage the patronage of Nigerian-made products.
Beyond the planned uniform change, the minister disclosed that the Federal Government is also restructuring the NYSC deployment system to ensure corps members are posted based on their academic qualifications, professional backgrounds and areas of study.
According to him, the reform is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the scheme by enabling corps members to serve in areas where their expertise can make the greatest impact, while contributing more meaningfully to national development.
Olawande noted that the ongoing reforms reflect the government’s commitment to transforming the NYSC into a more productive and development-oriented institution that supports youth empowerment, national integration and economic growth.
