Insecurity: Otti Bans Commercial Motorcycle Operations in Aba, Others
The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, within the metropolitan areas of Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia as part of measures to strengthen security and improve public safety across the state.
The government said the directive is aimed at enhancing security, easing traffic congestion, and promoting a more organised and efficient transportation system in the affected urban centres.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed that the ban will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
According to the statement, the policy forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security, improve traffic management, and ensure the safety of residents.
The state government directed all commercial motorcycle operators to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas on or before the effective date.
Security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
The government warned that any operator found violating the order would be arrested, while the motorcycle used in contravention of the ban would be confiscated in accordance with the law.
“Any individual or operator found violating this order shall be arrested, while the motorcycle involved shall be confiscated in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
The government further called on residents, transport operators, community leaders, and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with authorities in implementing the policy, describing it as a necessary step toward enhancing collective security and advancing the state’s development agenda.
It urged all concerned persons to take immediate note of the directive and comply accordingly.
